The Orlando Pride looked for all the world like they were about to sustain a two-game home losing streak. Down two goals to Angel City — a team the Pride had never beaten at Inter&Co Stadium — and looking hardly in the mood for the first half, the Pride came out of the locker room rejuvenated. Still, it took a while to break through and climb back into the match. Once that happened, Orlando always looked capable of going on and picking up all three points, which is what transpired. It was not only the Pride’s first home win over Angel City (and the first win by the home team in the all-time series), but it was also the club’s first multi-goal comeback victory.

We discuss the game’s talking points and big moments, check our score predictions from last week, and make our selections for Player of the Match in the Pride’s 3-2 home win over Angel City.

This week’s mailbagbox wants to know about expected goals, NWSL parity, the Pride’s choice of starters, underrated moments in the match, a second division in the women’s game in North America, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. You can use that same hashtag and hit @TheManeLand.bsky.social up on Bluesky. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

Following our mailbagbox segment, we break down Orlando’s upcoming trip to Portland. The Pride have a terrible record at Providence Park (as most teams other than the Thorns do), but can Orlando exact some revenge for the Thorns ruining their unbeaten record late last season? We dive into the series history and the tale of the tape, provide our key matchups for Saturday night, and make our predictions for the final score. We’re coming to the realization that we normally predict pretty much the same few scores over and over. Soccer!

Here’s how Episode 84 went down:

0:15 – The Pride looked like they were about to take a second straight loss, but in the second half, they decided to win instead.

18:21 – Our listeners must know things. And we’re here to help with that need to know in our mailbagbox segment.

41:30 – The Pride head to a difficult place to get results with a trip to Portland coming up this weekend.

PawedCast Episode 475: Atlanta Rewind, OCB-NYRB II, Chicago Preview, and More https://themaneland.com/2025/04/29/pawedcast-episode-475-atlanta-rewind-ocb-nyrb-ii-chicago-preview-and-more/ https://themaneland.com/2025/04/29/pawedcast-episode-475-atlanta-rewind-ocb-nyrb-ii-chicago-preview-and-more/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 29 Apr 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://themaneland.com/?p=46975

Orlando City finally found its scoring boots late in the first half on Saturday. After a cagey, cautious opening half hour, the Lions started creating chances — one of which led to a penalty kick, which Luis Muriel buried. From there, the Lions went on to score twice after halftime (and it could have been more) in a thorough 3-0 win over rival Atlanta United. The Five Stripes rarely threatened Pedro Gallese’s penalty area, let alone his goal.

We looked back at the key moments in the match, check in our score predictions from last week, and make our selections for Man of the Match. We’re just happy Orlando City finished the game with all 11 players on the field and that it wasn’t another scoreless draw, but a win over a rival is a serious amount of icing on the cake.

The mailbagbox asks about young players scoring for Orlando City, what’s changed for the team in recent weeks, the USMNT, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

OCB got a lot of regular players back but the defense was even more leaky against New York Red Bulls II than it was against Inter Miami II last week. The Young Lions are not communicating or executing effectively in their own end, although they continue to put the ball in the net. They missed a couple of chances to get more out of what ultimately became a 4-2 loss, but some of the finishing was missing and the defense was a problem all night.

Finally, we looked ahead to Orlando City’s visit to Chicago to play the Fire on Saturday. We dissect the series history between the two clubs, provide our key matchups that we think will decide the game, and try to predict the final score of the match. We’ll check on how we did early next week, as we look to move into our first two-episode week of the 2025 season.

Here’s how No. 475 went down:

0:15 – The Lions managed to keep their fourth consecutive clean sheet and this time there was no sacrifice at the offensive end, with Orlando City ultimately dominating Atlanta.

20:34– The mailbagbox is interested in the changes in Orlando City’s fortunes.

41:23 – OCB spent most of Sunday night getting caught in NYRB II traps, and the Lions head to the Windy City.

The Orlando Pride lost a home game, which hasn’t happened in a while. If I were wired in any kind of normal way, I’d remember how great that 22-match unbeaten run at home was, rather than the absolute howler that helped put a stop to that streak. But I’m wired like I am, which means obsessing and wondering why an experienced player continues to make the kinds of plays that indicate no learning has been done to prevent furthere such errors.

Orlando’s 1-0 home loss to the Washington Spirit could have happened in a variety of ways. After all, the Spirit are a top team in the NWSL. They’re talented. They’re well coached. They’re hard to break down and difficult to keep off the board. Yet it was simply Anna Moorhouse’s refusal to make a simple pass to the left while under pressure that turned what could have been an unsastisfying-but-hard-fought 0-0 draw into a loss.

We look back at another subpar offensive night for the Pride, check our score predictions from last week, and make our selections for Player of the Match.

This week’s mailbagbox wants us to put the loss into perspective, asks us to opine on whether Adriana’s loss is affecting the Pride’s scoring, wonders what it’ll take for a different goalkeeper to get minutes for Orlando, wants to know where Angelina should be playing, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Following our mailbagbox segment, we look ahead to Friday’s date with Angel City. The Pride have faced their first adversity of the 2025 season, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can bounce back against an opposing team that has yet to lose in Orlando. We look at the series history and the current position of both clubs, provide our key matchups for Friday, and make our predictions for the final score of the match.

Here’s how Episode 83 went down:

0:15 – The Pride lost a home game for the first time in more than a year and a simple timely pass would have allowed the club to avoid dropping all three points.

10:27 – Our listeners have all of the questions. We have some of the answers.

31:50 – The Pride will look to rebound from their loss to Washington on Friday when Angel City visits.

Orlando City did not play particularly well against CF Montreal, but the Lions still seemed more likely to take three points from the match than the hosts until Rafael Santos picked up a second yellow card. The lack of discipline on the back line the last couple of weeks has been shocking. Even if a card or two may have been soft, once a player has one, they need to walk the appropriate line to keep from putting their team in a bad situation. Rodrigo Schlegel and Santos have hopefully learned that lesson and shown it to the entire squad the last two weeks.

The sending off of Santos was ironic, considering he was only on the pitch because Kyle Smith had been sitting on a yellow card since the third minute, and Oscar Pareja decided not to risk a second booking for his left back in the second half. Instead, Smith’s replacement picked up two, and as a result, Orlando picked up only one point against what is currently the worst team in Major League Soccer. That’s three consecutive scoreless draws for Orlando, and that simply makes for a terrible stretch of soccer viewing.

We look back at our score predictions, chat about the game’s major talking points, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

The mailbagbox asks about our EPL teams, officiating, holiday treats, potential lineup changes, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

OCB once again played Inter Miami II in Bradenton, and again it didn’t go well. The Young Lions were missing a few key players, but it was some uncharacteristically shoddy defending that did them in this week. Orlando City B also didn’t finish enough of its chances and now must regroup at home against New York Red Bulls II.

Orlando City returns home Saturday to face rival Atlanta United. The Lions won’t have Santos, but Schlegel returns from suspension, so it will be interesting to see if David Brekalo returns to left back. However, it’s the offense that has been troublesome of late, and the Lions must start getting something from the striker position again, and it would be optimal if the Designated Players in the attacking midfield would start scoring again. Or a central midfielder. Or even a defender. Goals, please, is I guess what I’m saying. We provide our key matchups for this Southeastern showdown match and offer up our score predictions.

Here’s how No. 474 went down:

0:15 – The Lions are shut out for the third straight week but also shut out the opponent for the third weekend in a row. You have to continue to take the good with the bad, I guess.

23:08– The mailbagbox is a feisty one this week.

54:57 – OCB can’t solve the Inter Miami II riddle, while the Lions get another chance to remember how to score goals when Atlanta visits on Saturday.

SkoPurp Soccer Episode 82: Seattle Rewind, Spirit Preview, and More https://themaneland.com/2025/04/16/skopurp-soccer-episode-82-seattle-rewind-spirit-preview-and-more/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 14:47:59 +0000 https://themaneland.com/?p=46680

The Orlando Pride returned from the break and picked up basically where they left off, playing well enough to beat the Seattle Reign on the road, while not exactly impressing with the performance that earned those three points. All wins in the NWSL are good, and none seem to come easily, but the Pride made things unnecessarily difficult on themselves in the second half with giveaways and inconsistent defending. Anna Moorhouse had to come up huge late in the game to preserve a 1-0 lead that Barbra Banda had supplied just before halftime.

We look back at another low-scoring Pride win, check our score predictions from last week’s show, and make our selections for Player of the Match.

This week’s mailbagbox wants to know how the Pride turned around their history of past failures, how smart USWNT Head Coach Emma Hayes is, narratives about the Pride-Spirit series, and more. Following our mailbagbox segment, we look ahead to Saturday’s matchup between the Pride and the Spirit. Orlando may have won trophies with consecutive victories over the Spirit, but Washington got the last laugh by winning the postgame penalty shootout to claim the 2025 NWSL Challenge Cup at Inter&Co Stadium. The Pride will have to be sharper than they’ve been at both ends in recent games to hold off one of the league’s top contenders. We provide our key matchups and our score predictions.

33:00 – The Pride return home for a pivotal match against the Washington Spirit.

Orlando City played much better against the New York Red Bulls than it did on the road at Philadelphia, but a lack of finishing precision and two ill-advised yellow cards on Rodrigo Schlegel eventually turned a game full of promise into an exercise in protecting a point. To their credit, the Lions did that, but the way they’d been dominating play, it was a disappointing home result, despite running the team’s unbeaten streak to five games.

We look back at our score predictions to see if we came close, discuss the game’s big talking points, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

The mailbagbox asks about Orlando being a defensive-minded team now, our first dates, David Brekalo at left back, and more. OCB became the first team to score on New England Revolution II last week, as Shak Mohammed’s late goal lifted the Young Lions to a 1-0 home victory. The reserve team is off to a strong start, but may be shorthanded Tuesday night against Inter Miami after several OCB players took part in the Generation Adidas Cup group stage from Saturday through Monday.

Orlando City is right back on the road for its fifth away match in seven games Saturday night when the Lions visit Stade Saputo to face CF Montreal. We look at the series history, provide our key matchups to the game, and try our hand at making our final score predictions for the match.

The Orlando Pride had the weekend off with the exception of a few international players. Emily Sams didn’t play Saturday and we recorded this week’s show before Tuesday’s late night match against Brazil in California. Angelina played for the Brazilians, but it was the Yanks who prevailed in the opener.

This week’s mailbagbox wants to know how quickly the NWSL will expand, whether international officiating was bad in the USWNT-Brazil match, our favorite in-person Pride experience, whether Orlando’s internationals will be available for Saturday’s game, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. The Pride go to Seattle on Saturday to face the Reign. Orlando has historically not done well in the Pacific Northwest and the Pride have only one road win in this series. Will the Pride be able to stay focused, play hard, and get a result in the state of Washington? We preview the game, give you our key matchups for Saturday, and make our predictions for the final score. We get to come back next week and talk about it!

Orlando City overcame an entire missing starting central midfield Saturday when the Lions faced the Philadelphia Union, but it turned out the backups did just fine. Joran Gerbet and Dagur Dan Thorhallsson helped the Lions keep their first clean sheet of 2025, along with the insertion of David Brekalo at left back in kind of a hybrid role. Unfortunately, a good defensive outing was counterbalanced by a dearth of offensive chances. Orlando City created a couple of good ones but couldn’t pay them off in what ultimately turned into a scoreless draw on the road.

We look back at our score predictions, discuss the tactics and the few chances the two sides managed to create, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

The mailbagbox asks about our thoughts on Guiness and dark beers, personnel strategies for the U.S. Open Cup, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

OCB was shorthanded when the Young Lions visited Chattanooga FC on Saturday night. Several regulars were in Philly with the first team, and the Young Lions weren’t able to overcome that in a 2-0 road loss — the team’s first of the season.

Orlando City returns home after two weeks away and the New York Red Bulls will be the guests Saturday afternoon. The Lions will complete their season series with the Red Bulls and will need to find their precision in the final third to get a win over a goal-stingy New York side. We provide our key matchups and final score predictions for the match.

Here’s how No. 472 went down:

The Orlando Pride made it three wins in three attempts Saturday afternoon on a hot day at Inter&Co Stadium. While the opponents didn’t offer up the usual own goal this week, the Pride needed both a Haley McCutcheon goal and a Marta penalty — taken a second time after hitting the post as Kailen Sheridan left her line early — to get the dub against the San Diego Wave this week. While it wasn’t a crisp performance, it was another win, and you can’t be too unhappy with wins.

We break down the talking points from Orlando’s win over the Wave, check back on our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match.

The international break is now upon us, and a couple of Pride players might face each other in this window when the United States Women’s National Team faces Brazil.

This week’s mailbagbox wants to know about Haley McCutcheon’s goal celebration music, players not named Emily Sams suiting up for the USWNT, an interesting hypothetical involving either Kerry Abello or Marta, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. With no Orlando Pride match to preview this week, the show ends after the mailbagbox, but it was a lengthy one, at least (both this episode, all things considered, and the mailbagbox segment itself). We’ll be back next week to get you ready for the Pride’s trip to the Pacific Northwest to face the Seattle Reign.

If you’d like to support our independent writing and podcasting efforts, we’d love to have you as a subscriber or donor over at our Buy Me a Coffee site.

Here’s how Episode 80 went down:

0:15 – The Pride played better against San Diego than they did at Gotham, but it still wasn’t as good as Orlando is capable of playing. We’ll gladly take the win, though.

25:46 – The mailbagbox has plenty of questions this week.

Orlando City brought three improbable points home from Los Angeles after a wild finish between the Lions and the Galaxy turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 road victory. Another defensive lapse on a possibly offside goal early in the match looked like it might end up being decisive until Eduard Atuesta had his foot stepped on in the box late in the second half. Martin Ojeda dispatched the penalty, and it was game on, with Luis Muriel scoring a crazy winner that John McCarthy failed to handle cleanly. Whatever mojo was working, the Lions will gladly accept the win and move on.

We look back at our score predictions, discuss the critical plays and players in the game, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

The mailbagbox asks about Rafael Santos and Ivan Angulo, whether David Brekalo has a future at left back, whether one of our writers will become a podcast guest, and more. OCB has a trip to face Chattanooga FC Saturday night, which is a shame, because the Young Lions will start their game just 30 minutes before the MLS side kicks off. We look briefly at the matchup.

Orlando City will head north to wrap up the regular-season series against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday. The Lions will need to continue to tighten up the defense against one of the league’s most dangerous attacks so far in 2025. The Union will be eager to get back on track after suffering a loss to Miami. We look at the history of the series, select our key matchups in the game, and make our score predictions.

Here’s how No. 471 went down:

0:15 – The Lions fall behind on a goal that looked offside, but drew a penalty late and then won the game on a crazy free kick blunder.

31:42– The mailbagbox is intrigued by Brekalo at left back.

50:03 – OCB heads to Chattanooga, while the senior squad seeks revenge in Philadelphia.
